As a signature event celebrating HKUST's 35thanniversary, "The Melody of Eternal Harmony" Special Concert was successfully held at the HKUST Shaw Auditorium on August 25, 2026, drawing over 600 faculty members, students, alumni, and members of the public. The event brought together the Chinese Orchestra of the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music (ZJCM) and internationally acclaimed musicians for an evening blending traditional Chinese heritage with contemporary artistry.
Conducted by maestros Wang Fujian and Zhou Zhan, the concert featured world-renowned soloists including pipa virtuoso Wu Man, erhu performer Zhang Yongyin, baritone Liu Tao, pianist Wu Junlin, and dizi (bamboo flute) master Wei Sijun. The programme highlighted the cultural charm of the Jiangnan region through works such as Grand Music of Bells and Drums Guofeng, High Mountains and Flowing Water, Pining in Blue, the dizi concerto Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge, and the piano concerto Memories of Jiangnan. The encore featured beloved classics including Horse Racing, Cantonese Music Thunder in a Drought, and The Pearl of the Orient. The performance concluded with a specially arranged Chinese orchestral rendition of the HKUST Anthem.
HKUST President Prof. Nancy Ip welcomed the ZJCM delegation led by its President Prof. WANG Rui to present this inspiring performance, and emphasized that great universities unite ideas, culture, and community— far beyond academic discovery. She noted that HKUST is committed to holistic education, believing that music and the arts inspire creativity and cultivate the humanistic spirit. She also expressed hope that the concert would foster further collaboration between the two young institutions across science, technology, and the arts.
The ZJCM's Chinese Orchestra, which has performed at major events such as the G20 Summit and toured internationally, brought exceptional artistry to the stage. The concert not only enriched HKUST's anniversary celebrations but also strengthened cultural and educational ties between Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.
