COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
Thirty-five years ago, a bold vision for building a new kind of university took root in Hong Kong—one dedicated to excellence, innovation, and global impact. Today, as we celebrate our 35th anniversary, we reflect with pride on a journey that has shaped our campus and transformed the lives of generations of students, scholars, and communities around the world.
From its founding as Hong Kong’s first research-intensive university, HKUST has consistently redefined the boundaries of knowledge and generated an extensive suite of learning and research opportunities. Our Schools of Science, Engineering, Business and Management, Humanities & Social Science, and the Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies infuse the campus with a glowing culture of collaboration. Through this interdisciplinary approach, our community drives solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges while empowering graduates—entrepreneurs, researchers, leaders, and innovators—to shape industries, advance knowledge, and build a better future across continents.
Guided by the ancient Confucian insight to “establish oneself at thirty and act with clarity before forty,” HKUST stands today as a university in its vibrant prime: young in spirit, clear in purpose, and unwavering in momentum. Our journey, though not yet four decades long, has been marked by decisive strides and a steadfast commitment to our founding ideals
Looking forward, we remain dedicated to our original mission—to educate with purpose, innovate with courage, and serve with compassion. Another key milestone in this journey will be the establishment of Hong Kong’s third medical school, an endeavor that aligns fully with our vision. This school will nurture a new generation of clinician-scientists, skilled in advanced technology and compassionate care, bringing renewed energy and expertise to Hong Kong’s healthcare ecosystem and addressing the needs of an aging society.
None of this would have been possible without the enduring dedication of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners. To each of you—thank you. You are the heart of HKUST, and your belief and hard work have shaped this university into a beacon of excellence and a catalyst for meaningful progress.
As we mark this important milestone, let us reaffirm our shared commitment to building a brighter, more sustainable, and inclusive future—for Hong Kong, for the nation, and for the world.
