Over the past two years, the Cross-Campus Playshop for Language and Cultural Exchange (PLACE) Summer Camp has developed into a signature international summer program for the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou). Dedicated to guiding global youth to delve deeply into the technological frontiers and cultural roots of the Greater Bay Area, the program serves as an exchange bridge connecting academia and culture for participants, while boosting the international profile of both HKUST and HKUST(GZ).
In 2026, PLACE achieved a historic breakthrough by launching its first cross-campus joint collaboration between HKUST and HKUST(GZ). Participants travelled across both Guangdong and Hong Kong to experience an immersive journey into Lingnan culture and experience HKUST’s innovative spirit through a series of activities, including visits to Lingnan intangible cultural heritage sites, study tours of the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge, research visits to Greater Bay Area innovation parks, diverse sports workshops, and the Global Citizens Challenge.
As one of the significant events of HKUST's 35th Anniversary celebration series, the PLACE Opening Ceremony was held on 10 August 2026 at HKUST(GZ). The event drew senior officials from Guangdong and Guangzhou municipal education and foreign affairs authorities, Consuls-General and consular officials of Spain, Malaysia, the UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and other nations based in Guangzhou, industry-university collaborative partners, senior university management, as well as young participants from over 40 countries and regions worldwide. The officiating guests jointly launched the summer camp, followed by East-meets-West artistic performances presented by student societies. Participants from various countries also shared their expectations, officially kicking off the two-week cross-campus exchange journey.
PLACE successfully concluded at the HKUST Shaw Auditorium on 21 August 2026. Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) of HKUST, attended the closing ceremony and delivered a speech. Awards were presented to outstanding participants, Learning Coaches, and Activity Coaches. All participants gathered together to reflect on this fruitful summer journey, drawing a perfect close to the summer camp.
