SURREALITY 2.0 expands upon the success of the 2025 Mixed Reality (MR) and AI Art Exhibition launched at HKUST(GZ), now expanding to both campuses with a new theme for HKUST’s 35th Anniversary: Unified HKUST, Complementary Campuses.
The exhibition presents a curated selection of digital artworks that critically or creatively engages with AI, such as spatial installations and AI-generated video works, while also introducing newly commissioned work debuting at the Clear Water Bay campus. Enhanced with MR technology, the experience creates a surreal, hybrid art space that seamlessly links the two campuses. Visitors can step through virtual portals to move from one campus’s mixed reality experience into the other campus’s explorable virtual reality environment, collapsing physical distance through a shared metaverse.
In addition to the curated works, interactive elements—including landmark explorations and treasure hunt-style tasks—invite participants using MR devices such as Pico headsets and mobile devices, including iPads, to navigate the space and uncover hidden surprises.
More than an exhibition, SURREALITY 2.0 serves as a living laboratory for future research in the metaverse, computational creativity, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It positions HKUST as a global platform where artistic innovation and technological excellence converge, strengthening a culture of boundary-breaking creativity.
